This weeks featured artist is Gato Barbieri, 1932 – 2016.
From Santa Fe, Argentina, Mr. Barbieri is one of our great romantic Latin jazz saxophonists from the 20th century.
Heavily influenced by Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, his rise began in the 1950s and ’60s as he fused the soulful sounds of South America with modern jazz. One of his best albums, Caliente, was produced at A&M Records in 1976.
Three pieces from Mr. Barbieri’s collection that I recommend for everyone’s playlist are a stunning jazz saxophone version of Carlos Santana’s “Europa,” “She is Michelle,” written for his beloved wife, and “Straight Into the Sunrise.”
I hope you enjoy.
